Lively markets [click to enlarge]Situated in the Lot, Les Moustans is close to the medieval town of Montcuq and about 20km west of Cahors. It is a region of pretty bastide towns, châteaux perched on clifftops, glorious sunflowers and shady walnut groves.
Warm days begin in mid-April, and by May the meadows are bursting with wild flowers. July and August are hot - in September and October, the warm sun melts away the morning mists. Spring and autumn are unusually mild and the southern blue skies of summer mean long hot days and warm evenings.Fields of lavender [click to enlarge]
The River Lot [click to enlarge]The River Lot winds its way past the undulating hills, weaving a blue ribbon through some of the oldest vineyards in France. The delectable black wine produced by the Cahors vineyards is famous the world over.
The Lot and Quercy region is also well known for its delicious local delicacies. You will find that duck, truffles, cèpes, walnuts, goat cheese (cabécou) and foie gras are always available at the splendid local markets, as well as offered on the menus of most of the restaurants here.Cèpes - another local delicacy [click to enlarge]
Swim at Montcuq [click to enlarge]Montcuq is a small bustling town with lively bars and cafés, and has a wonderful market every Sunday morning. At Montcuq you can enjoy horse riding, walking, cycling, fishing, golf and the beautiful swimming lake (Lac de Montcuq) with its sandy beach.
Cahors dates back 2000 years and is the most important town in rural Quercy. It is a medieval town encircled and protected by the River Lot. Its fortified bridge, Pont Valentre, has seven pointed arches spanning the river. Cahors is also famous for its Cathedral de St-Etienne, its busy shops and cafés, the dark, heady Cahors wine, its truffle centre and the colourful market. An evening stroll by the river in Cahors [click to enlarge]

St-Cirq-Lapopie, perched on the clifftops above the River Lot, is one of the most beautiful villages in France.
Travelling north into the Dordogne region, Rocamadour is well worth a visit. The village clings to a cliff face and is a meeting point for pilgrims of St-Amadour, a Christian hermit.
The Gouffre-de-Padirac is one of the major attractions in the area. A stunning succession of galleries has been created by a cave collapsing. A lift takes you down to the bottom of the deep chasm and you can then travel along a subterranean river by boat.
Further north still is Sarlat - a town of honey-coloured stone buildings and with a famous Saturday market. It has the highest concentration of medieval, renaissance and 17th-century façades in France. Nearby and surrounded by fabulous scenery, Lascaux and Les Eyzies have a multitude of prehistoric caves to explore.
La Roque-Gageac nestles on cliffs overlooking the River Dordogne. And further along the river, you come to Bergerac - a town famous for its gastronomy and glorious wine.
To the south of Les Moustans is Toulouse - the fourth largest metropolis in France. Best seen on foot, the city is famous for its rose-coloured buildings, two amazing cathedrals, its cosmopolitan shops and the wonderful regional cuisine.
And if you’re really feeling adventurous, a drive into Spain or Andorra up steep mountain roads will certainly add a bit of spice to your holiday!

Saint-Matré
The village
St-Matré has a beautifully restored church, a small restaurant, a "dépôt de pain" where you can buy fresh bread, a tennis court, a post office and a petrol station.

The château
St-Matré's Château Vent d'Autan vineyard produces organic red wine. Since 1991, the grapes have been grown without the use of chemicals, pesticides or weedkillers. The wine has the label "Demeter" - an organic classification which has been awarded to just 55 vineyards across the whole of France.
